What FSRS actually is

FSRS means Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler, an open scheduling algorithm available in modern Anki and used by OmniRN. Your review history and recall ratings help determine when a card returns. See the Anki deck options manual.

Anki includes FSRS in its settings; it does not require an add-on for basic FSRS use. OmniRN combines scheduling with prebuilt nursing cards. Neither the scheduler nor a particular app guarantees retention or exam success.

When to keep Anki

• You already maintain a clean personal deck and love customization
• You need cloze deletion gymnastics, image occlusion stacks, and niche add-ons
• You study multiple professional exams in one Anki profile
• You enjoy the craft of card-making as part of learning
• You want zero subscription for desktop review (accepting mobile/app costs separately as applicable)

If that is you, keep Anki. OmniRN is an alternative, not a mandatory replacement.

When OmniRN is the better Anki alternative for nursing

• You want to open the app and review nursing cards today
• You want prebuilt nursing content with FSRS scheduling
• You distrust random shared decks with wrong doses or outdated lab values

Comparing with Quizlet

Quizlet can be useful for quick vocabulary drills and classmate sets. Compare its current study modes with the work you want to do across a semester:

1. Scheduled recall practice based on how well you remembered each card
2. NGN clinical judgment questions with option-by-option rationales
3. Dose math with units at each step

Check shared content against your course materials, whichever platform you use.

How OmniRN combines cards + questions (why this matters)

Flashcards alone do not equal NCLEX readiness. Questions alone do not equal durable memory for drug classes and labs. OmniRN's design assumption is simple:

• Cards carry the high-frequency facts you forget under stress
• Questions force you to apply those facts in stems, including NGN formats

Recipe A: OmniRN-only school year: Daily FSRS reviews + topic questions aligned to the syllabus (6 modules / 23 topics) + dose math before clinicals.

Recipe B: Keep Anki, add OmniRN questions: Advanced Anki users keep custom cloze decks; use OmniRN for NGN items and med math. (Two systems; only worth it if you already love Anki.)

Recipe C: Quizlet for class + OmniRN for retention: Use classmate Quizlet sets for tomorrow's quiz; use OmniRN FSRS for what must stick until NCLEX.

Recipe D: School year OmniRN → late dedicated QBank: Use both if they meet different needs. OmniRN during program; optional UWorld or Archer in the last stretch for CAT volume. Not required, not forbidden.
